Project Origins

Mid 2020, Common Ground and Studio Dojo supported a mental health sector stakeholder to understand the landscape, target community and needs. Thereafter, we formed the research question: “What is the experience of a young person in Singapore discovering that they have a mental health condition?”

“Systematic method of analyzing & collecting data to develop potential theories that is comparative, iterative, and interactive.”

– Grounded Theory

We used the Grounded Theory approach to sense-make the two sets of interview data that we had. The grounded theory approach provided an iterative, interactive way of allowing insights to naturally emerge from the data.

In a 5 step process, a team of 4 coders first wrote initial memos, came together to develop a codebook, then went back and individually re-coded the transcripts. With the new memos, the team then collectively discussed and crafted insights.

A CROSS-SECTOR COLLABORATION

Serving as context lead (mental health)

Serving as process lead (service design)

A starting point for further exploration

We are excited to unveil the journey maps presenting the experiences of an employee navigating their mental wellbeing at the workplace, and a report that uncovers insights into our workplace environments and presents opportunities for growing your understanding and or even finding new ways to change the situation around you.

The final journey map and report produced are based on relevant extracts from 30 interviews with individuals discovering that they have a mental health condition, and 10 interviews with HR professionals and senior leaders of organisations from the public, private and people sectors.

Whilst we have sought to represent their experiences as best as we could, we acknowledge that there are many other unique experiences that may not have been captured in this map.
